FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
Do I need a web site?
- You can start a newsletter or mailing list without
having a web site. Of course, you should have
a web site for additional information and contact
with your subscribers, but it is not necessary.
I have a web site now, must
I transfer the hosting to you?
- Not at all! Our newsletter / mailing list
hosting service is completely independent of our web
site hosting. We do encourage you to review
our very affordable, excellent hosting packages
available at
www.voicegateway.com
You're prices are really
low, but can't I use free services like Yahoo
groups? Free services
append advertising to every newsletter you send.
It's probably ok for a personal or hobbyist list,
but for any commercial use, you certainly don't want
to be confusing your readers promoting someone
else's product.
What's the difference
between "opt-in" and "opt-out"?
All non-spam mailing lists must
ask permission from the potential subscribers before
sending them any E-mail. "Opt-out" refers to
the sleazy tactic of assuming it ok to send someone
E-mail unless or until, they specifically ask you to
stop doing it. "Opt-in" is the professional,
respected approach of never sending anyone anything
until after they have explicitly given you
permission.
How do I make my newsletter
"opt-in"? In your
sign-up materials, whether it's a printed sign-up
form, a postcard, or an online "Subscribe me" form,
be sure and clearly say something like "By signing
up here and providing your E-mail address I am
giving you permission to send me your weekly
newsletter about XYZ".
I want to add a "subscribe
to our newsletter" form to our own web site, can you
help me?
- Sure! our service has an automated "sign-up
form generator" that create all the special html
code for you. Simply cut-and-paste into your
existing web site or have your designer do it for
you in only a few minutes.
How do I add my existing
subscribers?
- You can easily import your existing subscriber
list from a text file ("ascii file") or a database
output file "csv data format") that just about any
existing system will create for you.
I don't want to get "locked
in". What if I need to close my account?
- At any time you can export your entire list of
subscribers to a text file that can be easily used
anywhere else.
I have my own E-mail
software on my PC. Why can't I simply use
that? Our system has a
sophisticated subscribe/unsubscribe/transmission
methodology to make sure your newsletter is only
sent to those that want it and provides a foolproof
mechanism for unsubscribing. Sending from your
own PC will expose your entire subscriber list to
everyone if you use the "To:" field and if you hide
the recipients with the "BCC:" field, your mailing
will be blacklisted as spam, even if it's not. Not
to mention tying up your PC for hours during the
actual sending, manually having to wade through the
undeliverable results and message failures, along
with no automatic re-transmission for transient
errors.
